Michael J. Syrko, 82, passed away on February 16, 2026. Born on March 28, 1943, Michael (Mike) graduated from Ambridge High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Following basic training, he married his high school sweetheart, Coralee Smith, in 1963, beginning a 63-year marriage defined by loyalty, strength, and devotion. During his Army service, Mike served in Korea, along the DMZ, as a Nike missile technician. His service reflected the discipline and patriotism that would define his life. He later continued his service in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, where he worked as both a loadmaster and maintenance tech before retiring from the military. His years in uniform demonstrated his enduring dedication to country and community. Following active duty, Mike began a distinguished 35+ year career with Bell Telephone, eventually retiring from Verizon. He was a strong union advocate, and he served as the local CWA president. Mike also served as Police Chief for South Heights and Independence Township, Fire Chief of the Independence VFD, and Building Committee President for Independence Township where he was instrumental in the construction of the current fire station and local baseball/softball field. A lifelong hunter and fisherman, Mike spent countless hours in the woods and on the water, embracing the quiet discipline and patience those pursuits require. These moments were often shared with family and friends, creating memories that will endure for generations. Above all, Mike was a devoted husband and family man whose steady leadership, integrity, and unwavering sense of responsibility shaped the lives of those around him. He was preceded in death by his father, Andy and mother, Mary (Semko). He is survived by his wife Coralee (Smith), sons Michael Jr. (Ginelle, CA) and Daniel (Shelly, Aliquippa). He is also survived by siblings Bob (Patty, Baden), Ron (Mary, NY), Patty Karasko (KS), brother-in-law Bill Karasko (OH), and his four wonderful grandchildren, Nadia and Michael (Redlands, CA) and Maranda and Sam (Aliquippa). In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Mike will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his service, his strength, and his love for his family and his country. A service will be held at New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, officiated by Reverend Randall Clow, on a date TBD. A Celebration of Life will also be planned in the summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Independence Volunteer Fire Department.
